Seal Harbor on the southern side of Mt Desert Island may not have the marina facilities of its larger siblings Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor. But what it lacks in facilities is made up by a classic quaintness of a small Maine coastal harbor. To quote my better half, "it’s almost like a storybook." We prefer this harbor to the much more crowded Northeast Harbor or busy Southwest Harbor.
We visited the harbor in August 2006. Here’s what we found.
The Town Landing
Upon entering the harbor you are immediately faced with a massive granite structure - the town landing. There you’ll find water and the Harbormaster.
It’s a good place to stop for a short time - perhaps enough time to walk to town and back. According to the Coast Pilot the town landing has a "reported depth of 9' along side."
The Seal Harbor Yacht Club
Close by the town landing you’ll find the Seal Harbor Yacht Club. It’s a beautiful building elevated above the harbor. As we approached we were greeted by a club official who welcomed us to tie up for a spell. He was as friendly as can be.
The club maintains several guest moorings. They allowed us to tie up temporarily so we could visit the town to purchase ice.

The Beach Area
At the northern end of Seal Cove is a lovely, sandy public beach. Its fairly flat surface makes for an easy play area for children. Its proximity to route 3 makes it easily accessible by the road as well. And, it’s a hop and skip to the the town.
The Town
Apparently, the "town" just to the north of Seal Harbor isn’t actually a town at all, but part of Mount Desert community. Never-the-less it’s a charming place where you’ll find groceries, a restaurant, gas station and speciality shops. There’s also a small town park which was hosting a library book sale the day we were visiting. Charming. You can find additional information on the AcadiaMagic.com website

Anchoring and Moorings
According to the Coast Pilot: "Anchorage for small vessels may be had in the middle of the harbor in depths of 15 to 18 feet. This anchorage, about 400 yards in diameter, is exposed to southeasterly winds and is reported to experience considerable roll."
The harbor is well used for moorings but there appeared to be some space left for anchoring. The Harbor Master may be available at the town landing if you need assistance.
You might check with the Seal Harbor Yacht Club who maintains several guest moorings to see if one is available. Call them at: (207) 276-5888.
Conclusion
The photos say it all. Quaint, pretty, cozy and friendly. We’ll return.
