Great Island Boat Yard (and Marina), Great Island, Maine

Great Island Boat Yard (GIBY) can be found near the northern most tip of Quahog Bay, one of those large channels of water running N-NE into Casco Bay. It is fully protected from all directions except from the south.

Transient Moorings

This is a full service-marina. My first stop was to secure a mooring for several nights. The people who greet you in the small ships supply store were notably helpful to this first time user of their facility. Moorings are $20/night. You must have your own dingy to go ashore and to your boat. Some of the moorings are quite a ways down the narrow channel. You'll need a motor on that dingy if there is much wind.

Ship's Store

The ships store, though smallish, is well stocked with fittings and clamps and the various items you may need for repairs. Great Island Boat Yard is about 10 minutes from Brunswick, Maine where you can pretty much get anything else you might need.

Launching Ramp

The boat launch ramp is paved and surprisingly flat for Maine. Nearly two lanes wide, it serves its main purpose well - to launch and retrieve the really big boats serviced by the boat yard. GIBY have the launching of larger boats down to a science - I was amazed at how quickly and precisely they launched even deep keel sailboats.
