July 11th 2009 There's a new building under construction but the showers are available. Pumpout, hose water (not sure if potable), Gas and Diesel. Tight docking, but used to big boats. Full repair/launch services (but we did not use them ourselves). Friendly staff despite the discombulation. We stopped by on a Saturday. No food or store available, might change withthe new building.

I own a Rhodes Reliant 41 - a yawl rigged sloop originally built in 1965. After a total restoration at The Landing School of Boat Building & Design in Kennybunkport and at French & Webb in Belfast I needed a yard to store and maintain Owl in the condition to which she had now attained. Steve and Steffany Row are professionals. They know how to run a business. They asses problems, quote projects, and finish work on time. When, on occasion, they make a mistake, they own up to it and correct the problem. Over the three years I have been with them, we have never had an argument or difficult discussion. Engineers by training they know how the "real world" operates and have brought to our relationship a reliable/valuable service.Tthey have the loyalty of their staff and this is noticable when observing them while visiting the yard. Anyone looking for a home to have work done, restore or house his or her boat for a winter should visit G.I.B.Y. and talk to Steve and Steffany. Please visit their web site for more testimonals - All of which I hardily agree with. Richard Currier

Great Island Boat Yard (GIBY) can be found near the northern most tip of Quahog Bay, one of those large channels of water running N-NE into Casco Bay. It is fully protected from all directions except from the south.

Transient Moorings

This is a full service-marina. My first stop was to secure a mooring for several nights. The people who greet you in the small ships supply store were notably helpful to this first time user of their facility. Moorings are $20/night. You must have your own dingy to go ashore and to your boat. Some of the moorings are quite a ways down the narrow channel. You'll need a motor on that dingy if there is much wind.

Ship's Store

The ships store, though smallish, is well stocked with fittings and clamps and the various items you may need for repairs. Great Island Boat Yard is about 10 minutes from Brunswick, Maine where you can pretty much get anything else you might need.

Launching Ramp

The boat launch ramp is paved and surprisingly flat for Maine. Nearly two lanes wide, it serves its main purpose well - to launch and retrieve the really big boats serviced by the boat yard. GIBY have the launching of larger boats down to a science - I was amazed at how quickly and precisely they launched even deep keel sailboats.

For us smaller recreational boaters, the fee is $5 each way. Parking was included as part of the mooring fee; I am not sure if there is a separate fee for parking if you are simply launching for the day.

We launched at 1/2 tide without issue. I have heard that you'll experience some mud at the bottom at low, so check in with Great Island to see if it is safe to launch your boat at lower tides.

Also one other note of interest - about 75' out from the ramp is a single pole coming out of the water. It is marking a large rock which is not visible at high - but looks mighty ugly at low. When we were there the pole was leaning over the rock; stay away from it. If in doubt check in with the friendly Great Island folks.
